#HEYGRRRLFRENNNS Next month we hit lucky number SEVEN MONTHS of radical self-care next month!! First I would like to thank Mother Nature for making it sooo hot outside that all I really wanted to do was type until my little fingers fell off. I would like to thank my actual mother as well! Without her, there is no me, and no radical new blog on the block! And most importantly I would like to seriously thank MY GRRRLS!!! You are the reason that we have been going so strong for this past few months, growing every single day, and reaching our greatest and highest good! We have absolutely been killing the radical self-care game and whether you’ve been a real one since day one or you’re just joining the grrrl gang you know what that means! We deserve to celebrate!! I am a firm believer that grrrls can do hard things, but doing those hard things is soo much more fun when you know there is going to be a little treat at the end of the tunnel! Preferably made of chocolate or diamonds!
When I think of treating myself my mind immediately goes to being pampered by professionals in a far away destination. I’m not even sure this place truly exists, it’s an exotic land where luxury spa experiences are free, the weather is gorgeous, and every picture I take is of my good side. As great as all of that sounds, we gotta get real, especially when the size of our wallets and free time don’t always match the size of our dreams yet. So I have two pieces of news for you! The good news is that you can achieve that same level of bliss and luxury in your current routine no passport needed. Step away from the suitcase! Yes, you heard me we got skin care at home! The even better news?? To celebrate our seven month anniversary of restarting our radical self-care journey together, I sat down with skin care specialist and certified yogi Mykira Bey to answer all of our of our questions about looking good and feeling better about our skin care routines. So, let’s get into the tea because this expert advice is a can’t miss opportunity!
So Fresh And So Clean Clean
Don’t under estimate the power of a good cleanser grrrls, because the first step to feeling luxurious for me is to literally wash the day away! When I am washing my face I am also washing away any reminders of my stressful, hectic, and undeniably imperfect work/life balance. I am immediately transformed into the Princess of Genovia and I finally feel free to turn my big brain off. There is a great sense of relief knowing that I am taking this space and time to focus on me, because literally the worst that can happen is a little soap in the eye action but who needs perfect vision anyways? I’m a survivor, I’m not gon give up! What really elevates this to feel more luxurious is deciding to really take your time to enjoy the moment. Take your time and really pamper yourself. Yes, your end goal is a clean face but we can bump the basics up to create a more indulgent experience. Remember grrrls, skincare is not just about looking good; it’s about feeling good too. Our skin is our largest organ, and taking care of it is a direct act of undeniable radical self-care. Mykira says, When it comes down to picking the best cleanser for my skin she’s like Cardi B, she doesn’t wanna choose because there are so many options and so many ingredients that the skin craves. She suggests if you’re an eczema prone normal skin type like her, then your skin may love a cream cleanser. They’re usually really gentle and leave a thorough clean finish without leaving your skin feeling stripped. Mykira says squalane and niacinamide are KEY ingredients to look for when searching for hydration and brightening. She explained, both are antioxidants, so they will protect your skin from environmental toxins, promote collagen strength, minimize enlarged pores, and are antibacterial (which means it’s great for acneic skin too). Here’s a quick reference guide that Mykira created for choosing the best type of cleanser according to your skin type:
Hello Hydration!
Let’s not forget the holy grail of any skincare routine: moisturizing. One of my top five pet peeves when it comes to my skin are the moments when it looks like I have been traveling across the desert in search of civilization. When I think of skin care I want to feel like Cleopatra, not King Tut. Mummy chic is sooo not my vibe! Also, being dehydrated feels physically uncomfortable. If there is one place that we deserve to feel comfortable it’s definitely the skin we are in! Find a way to introduce moisturizer into your routine that makes you feel like royalty every time you use it. That one little addition to your ritual could potentially be the exact thing you need to feel like a pampered princess. And why limit yourself to once a day? Your skin has different needs at different times of the day and throughout the year so the skincare opportunities are endless. If infinite possibilities feels overwhelming to you, first of all same, but the best thing to do is just to listen to your skin and adjust your routine accordingly. Mykira agrees, your skin needs to be loved differently in each season and based on the time of day. She suggests, in warmer seasons or climates, to reach for something lightweight but packed with lots of hydrating ingredients like squalane, aloe vera, or hyaluronic acid. Mykira says it’s always a bonus if your morning moisturizer is an SPF hybrid and if you actually use it every single day (even on days you don’t leave the house)! In colder climates, she shares that a denser moisturizer could be your saving grace. Ingredients like honey, peptides, and even oatmeal can lock in moisture and keep the skin calm without suffocating or feeling heavy. Mykira suggests that moisturizer should always be applied last in your bedtime skincare routine, after applying serums, or the last product applied before SPF during the day. She says that a dime size amount goes a very long way. Not every product is for everyone so please do not use something because someone else told you it worked for them, so she recommends always seeking professional advice.

This is the perfect way to add some TLC to your D2D! Not to be dramatic but massage therapy is lowkey the forgotten step-child of skincare. It’s understandable though, we are soo busy and tired that when it comes time to do skincare sometimes it just feels easier to slap it on and go! Also, idk if it’s just me, but giving my face the rubdown special 3000 can feel awkward if it goes on too long. Plus, my arms be getting tired! Even though I don’t always have the arm strength, I do recognize that facial massages are actually the key to taking my skincare from basic to bougie so I try to make the extra effort. Not only does it give your skin a mini workout, but it also helps your products absorb better. Bonus points if you pop your roller in the fridge for a few minutes before using it—hello, instant cooling effect and tighter pores! While you are already in the mode to massage don’t forget to show the rest of your body some love too! Massaging your arms, legs, and shoulders can release built-up tension and improve circulation. It’s another luxurious way to pamper yourself and keep your entire body feeling rejuvenated. Mykira has one question for you grrrls, “Have you ever heard of Gua Sha Massage?” (pronounced Gwa-Sha). She explains, Gua Sha massages help to reduce puffiness, increase blood circulation and collagen production, and it is super relaxing. Mykira says that it is literally one of the best types of facial massages that can be done in just five short minutes at any time of the day. This feels amazing on yourself but feels even better when a professional does it for you. If you have not tried it before, she says not to worry because she’s got you grrrl! Starting this August, she is creating a beautifully intentional 11 Day Guided Gua Sha series that will live on the @Mambey.Beauty IG feed.
We all have those days when we feel less than fabulous, and that’s okay. Skincare isn’t about perfection; it’s about feeling good and treating yourself with kindness. It’s fun to imagine making the more mundane activities in our life luxury experiences, but we also have to remember that making the space and time to take care of ourselves is necessary, and everyone deserves to feel safe and comfortable in their own skin. Your skincare routine is a powerful act of self-respect and self-expression. Own it, embrace it, and let it fuel your confidence to continue to move forward in your radical self-care journey.
