HEY GRRRLFREEEENNNN! Welcome to our first post of the second month of our radical self-care journey! Usually, I start these blog posts off with a little 411 on how crazy my life has been but to keep it real with you, I spent most of my week celebrating our progress and coming up with even more ideas to help us. You know, just grrrly things! Now that the champagne has been popped and our hangovers from celebrating our success are cured, it’s time to get back to business. March is Women’s History Month, which means that all the ghosts of grrrlfrens past are coming together to help us continue the journey to leveling up to the greatest and highest versions of ourselves, and this week we are talking about being more confident. Hallelujah!
First things first, Confidence is not only key– It is essential. There are way too many negative people, places, and things influencing us and turning up that little annoying song in our head that says, “Give it up! Stop trying!! Why you!?” until it’s so loud it’s the only thing we hear and if you’re not careful those thoughts can get stuck in your head and have some seriously negative consequences. Take it from me grrrls, If you don’t believe in yourself or your own ability, you are more susceptible to other people telling you what you are capable of which is extremely dangerous. Before you can show the world how amazing you are, you first have to believe it because if you don’t, you are only limiting yourself and sending a message to other people to reinforce that limiting behavior. So starting today, it’s main character energy only grrrly pops!
Start Small and Stack Habits
The first way to build more confidence in new areas of your life is to pair new actions that you want to take with areas of your life that you have already mastered. Habit stacking is a productivity and behavior change technique that involves integrating new habits into existing routines by “stacking” them on top of established ones. The idea behind this is that if you consistently practice something you already know you are good at, it makes trying the new habit easier to incorporate into your life and easier to feel confident practicing. We all have that one thing, or several things, that make us unique and that we are super confident in. For example, if you are a beast in the gym but have two left feet on the dance floor, then you could build your confidence by incorporating dancing into your workout routines. Start small, make a playlist that your body can’t resist moving to, and then work your way to celebrating completing your reps with your happy dance. After a few twerk sessions disguised as workouts, you will finally have the confidence to start that Zumba class you’ve been dying to join!
Practice Makes Progress
The secret to achieving confidence is realizing that knowledge is power, and the only reason that you are hesitant in the first place is because you are afraid of the unknown. I know firsthand that sometimes our brains can be bullies! Sometimes, all you want to do is try this really cool thing, but when you go to do it, all you can think of are the million and one things that could possibly go wrong when you do it. The easiest way to overcome this is to literally push yourself to try it at least once. Just once! When you try it, your brain is going to accumulate more information about the activity, recalculate the odds of the world ending because you tried something new, and ultimately, you will feel more confident the next time you decide to practice your new habit or hobby.
It’s not likely that things will go terribly wrong for you the minute you decide to step out of your comfort zone, but I’m not going to lie to you there is still a chance that things won’t go exactly as smoothly as you imagined. The first time I overcame my fear of being perceived and made my first TikTok, I was actually cyberbullied. Can you say EMBARRASSING? But after the initial shock of things not being perfect wore off, I realized that the worst that I thought would happen actually did, and I survived! Not only did I survive, but my passion for making content was still there. I’m still not where I want to be in my creator journey, but I am showing up every week and practicing because I get a little more confident every time I post, and no one can take that away from me.
Fake It Till You Make It
I’ll let you in on a little company secret grrrls, there is no such thing as the confidence police. You will never be forced to show proof of confidence before you enter the club because the best thing about confidence is that it is completely invisible! Gambling is not my thing, but I’m willing to roll the dice and guess that people are too preoccupied with pretending they’re confident to check if you actually are. If some joker tries to call your bluff, maintain your poker face and double down grrrl! Now with that in mind, I’m all for trying your luck but to be completely honest the “fake it till you make it” tactic is best used as a short-term strategy. It’s much easier to project confidence in a high-stakes situation if you do the work behind the scenes to learn and adapt. Continuously improve your skills and knowledge so that, over time, you genuinely become more confident in what you’re doing. Jackpot!
Grrrls, tapping into your main character energy is essential because your radical self-care journey is all about you! You don’t need permission to be yourself or star in your life. Your uniqueness is your strength. If you can’t see that for some reason, you can always rely on the grrrl power from this blog to help you find the confidence to become your greatest and highest self. Remember to have fun while pushing yourself outside your comfort zone. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about feeling fulfilled and making progress. Your hobbies and interests are only there to make you happy, not anyone else. Try all the new things, live life to the fullest, and feel confident enough to be yourself! I love you grrrls soo much, now go and be great!! Ttyl grrrlies!
